Ayurvedic Detox Programme
The concept of health has undergone immense transformation over the decades. The world has started to accept that health is not just a mere absence of a disease. People now realize that just eating raw vegetables or fruits, having gluten and sugar free diet or changing a little routine is not just enough. Being healthy is not just about a disease free body or getting a normal health report.
Optimal health is the state that is achieved when you experience fullness of life and joyfully vibrate with wisdom – physically, psychologically and spiritually. The obstacle in the path towards achieving optimal health can be called toxins. Ayurveda observes that toxins are the end products of unhealthy metabolism. It is formed in the upper gut due to derangement in the sequence of chemical interactions and cellular transformations. The toxins assimilate in the body fluids.
We live in the times where we come in constant encounter with physical, psychological and spiritual toxins. Physical toxins can be accumulated through eating dosha -contraindicated food, incompatible food, chemically processed /preserved food, micro waved food, long frozen food, dead source and untimely eating. Psychological toxins accumulate through stress, unproductive emotions and thoughts. Spiritual toxins may accumulate through inappropriate perception and learning, deceptive memory and ego. Seasons, environmental factors, habits and daily routine are also major contributors of toxicity in humans. The current millennium has been witnessing an alarming rise in geopathic and oxidative stress both of which which add a significant threat to mankind. Since toxicity is an unavoidable part of living, maintenance of optimum health to enhance immunity against toxins and promoting well being has to be given priority. In this context, detox programs comes to our aid. Every human has a specific physical, mental and spiritual construct. Hence it is important to know which detox is suitable for one’s body type before experimenting randomly.
The digestive tract has a major role in body’s natural detoxification. It is where the food is transformed into energy and toxins are eliminated. Hippocrates once said that, “Man is not what nourished by what he swallows ,but by what he digests and uses”. Our body has a natural detox mechanism that ensures elimination of toxins through urination, defecation and sweating at physical level. Breath detoxes the mind from unhealthy emotional and cognitive toxins. Meditation eliminates spiritual obstacles and enhances clarity of mind while harmonizing the body, mind and spirit.
Ayurveda recommends five types of detox procedures which are called as panchakarma. These are Emesis, Purgation, Enema, Nasal instillation and Blood Letting. Virechana is the detox by purgation. Here, The pan detox of all the tissues in the body is achieved through inducing loose bowels in the colon. Through virechana, the digestive system is completely cleansed than just the lower part of the colon. Virechana is widely practiced in ayurvedic tradition to do cleansing of blood toxins, stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, kidneys and bone marrow. It can be undertaken as a palliative care and preventive care program at least once a year, under the supervision of an ayurvedic expert.
Virechana is believed to enhance tissue functions and healing in conditions like chronic headaches, gynaecological disorders, asthma, diabetes, insomnia, chronic constipation and autoimmune disorders.
